The Company
A Frequently Painted WindowA Frequently Painted Window contains two one act ballets: "Pesni i tanzi" and "Time Quarry". The idea is to unite dance and music into one expression, and to see how the perception of Time changes. In "Pesni i tanzi" the Choreographer has made a choreography to music, while in "Time Quarry" the Composer has made music to chorography. "Pesni i tanzi" ("Songs and Dances" in Bulgarian) for Flute/Alto Flute, Clarinet/Bass Clarinet, French Horn and Piano contains 13 parts: four solo pieces, three duettes, three trios and three quartets. The selection and order is decided by the Master of Ceremony. The pitch material is generated from a row with six intervals. The subdivision of the bars and the rhythms are generated from Bulgarian folk music.
"Time Quarry" (confer comment in italics underneath) has a tape in addition to the quartet. The pitch material is generated from spectral analyses of the instruments in the quartet. As a contrast to "Pesni i tanzi" where the material within every piece is "locked", but the overall form is "free"; is the material within every section "free", but the overall form is "locked". The word "Quarry" has a threefold meaning: It is (1) a place from which stones are extracted, (2) a source of information or knowledge, i.e. old books, records etc, and (3) anything laboriously pursued. The PerformanceA Frequently Painted Window contains two ballets: Pesni i tanzi (Songs and dances in Bulgarian) and Time Quarry (In the sense of Quarry as a place to obtain for example stone for building something.)
