European Club Ranking

Calculation Method

Total Score

A club's total score is the sum of scores based on results from the club's domestic league and from its European cup matches during the last five years. An aim when the directions for the calculation were chosen was that, for the best clubs, these two parts of the score should be of somewhat equal magnitude. This is an important reason for the chosen values of factors and coefficients used in the calculation.

Domestic league score

The present or last season's score is added to the scores of the previous four seasons multiplied with factors 0.8, 0.6, 0.4 and 0.2 respectively. The total is then expressed as percentage of the maximum total score. However, since obtaining points is easier in a weak league than in a strong league, some tool of discrimination is needed. The percentage obtained of the maximum score is multiplied with the square root of the country's present UEFA coefficient. The product is the league score obtained by this club. In leagues that have final rounds for the best clubs (such as for the best eight clubs in the Swiss league), the score from the final round is divided by two and added to the score from the ordinary league. Relegation / promotion play-off matches are ignored. Only the top division of a country's league system is accounted for, so the ranking will be more unreliable the furher down it is followed.

European cups score

Counting 3 points for victories and 1 point for ties, the total score of the present or last season and of the four previous seasons are multiplied by factors 7.5, 6.0, 4.5, 3.0 and 1.5 respectively, and then added. For qualification matches 1.5 points is counted for victories and 0.5 points for ties. In matches where extra time is added, the results after extra time are used. Results of penalty shoot-outs are ignored. No bonus points are given for Champions League participation, nor for qualifying for quarter finals, semi finals or finals in either of the European cups.

I intend to update the ranking at the beginning of every month.
